ENCOUNTER: Storm (19) by CoffeeAddictedDragon ENCOUNTER: Storm (19) by CoffeeAddictedDragon
Yami's eyes opened, his vision blurry from sleep. Something had awoken him, but he couldn't figure out what, but there was a peculiar excitement in his bones, a kinetic and electric energy... He waited, curious as to what had roused him when the tank suddenly lit up in a brilliant flash of light. There was a serene moment of silence, a breathless pause, before a long, rolling boom washed over him. Thunder...

'A thunderstorm... That would explain it...' Yami thought, rising up from his sleeping arrangement and swimming up to the surface to get a better look. Sure enough, upon breaking the surface, he could see angry dark clouds up past the skylight. They rolled over each other, folding in upon themselves and billowing into massive intimidating plumes. There wasn't much rain, only a light drizzle, but the light and thunder was more then enough to make up for it. Bolts of lightening shot between the clouds now and again, though they mostly stayed within the giant vaporous things and lighting them up momentarily from the inside. Loud rolling thunder made the Ebony Royal's very bones vibrate, filling him with excitement and awe.

In the sea, he and other brave young mers would come up to the surface during these storms out in deep water and float on the surface, letting the usually turbulent seas carry them and send them tumbling back into the see, laughing. It was an odd feeling to now be watching a storm while the tide around remained as calm and stagnant as ever. He wasn't sure if he liked it. It wasn't natural, but then again almost nothing in here was...

He sank below the surface again, listening and watching the effects of the storm  through the water as he lost himself in thought...

There was a shrill wail...

Yami's frills pricked up, a sound reaching them past the thunder. He turned, righting himself and glanced around. There was only one other person here with him, so at least that wasn't a mystery. "Mana?" He called out quietly, swimming slowly through the tank in search of the Gold Midian. "Mana where are you? Are you alright?"

A small voice replied from a small bunch of coral. The mermaid's head peeked up over the edge.

"I-I'm over he-"

BOOM

Mana cried out and dodged down again, curling into a tight ball of shivering gold scales, her hands over her head and as she frantically stuttered gibberish to herself. Yami blinked and swam down beside her, genuinely surprised. "Mana! What's wrong?"

By this point, the storm had reached it's loudest. Lightening flared and thunder roared, all the while Mana coward and mumbled broken sentences.

"I c-can't... Want Ma...had..."

"Mana?..." He placed a hand on her shoulder. Another clap of thunder sounded from above, and the mermaid yelped, literally jumping over the Yami and gripping his arm, burying her face in it as she shivered. Yami stiffened a bit, shocked by the reaction. Was she afraid of the storm?... He bit his lip, thinking. What could he do? He obviously couldn't just leave her like this, practically jumping out of her own scales anytime the thunder roared. Despite her essentially being a pet, she was a friend. But we wasn't exactly an expert and calming a hysterical mer down... Back in the ocean comfort wasn't exactly his strong suit, he had always been the stoic one. Yugi had always been the warm and comforting one.

Another roll of thunder and Mana's tail curled tighter around herself, making her seem even smaller then seemed possible. The Royal mer sighed and shifted a bit. He'd just have to do his best with what he knew.

"Mana?..." He tilted his head a little, trying to see her face. "Mana."

"..."

"Mana!"

"Mmph?..." One turquoise eye peeped out from behind her brown hair. Her pupils were huge with fear, a slight haze over them.

"Are you afraid of the thunder?..."

She opened her mouth to reply, but yet another roll of thunder silenced her immediately with a yelp.

"Well that answers my question..." Yami said, straightening up a bit. "Come... Let's find a more comfortable spot to wait out the storm." With this, Yami pushed off of the sand, expecting Mana to come with him. The gold mermaid didn't move, still clinging to his arm, not acting as an anchor. The ebony mer turned and tugged her arm gently. "Mana... Mana come on, you're not going to feel any safer here. Follow me!" He tugged again. Mana shook her head wildly, eyes huge. "No please don't make me!" She yelped, speaking coherently for the first time. Yami paused, sinking down a little to stand face to face with her. Mana stared at him, her grip on his arm loosening if only slightly. "Please..." She hissed desperately. "I don't w-wanna be let g-go again..."

'Be let go?...' Yami narrowed his eyes in confusion, what did that mean? He couldn't tell if it was her frightened state or if there was more meaning to it. Regardless, it at least gave him something to work with, confusing though it may be. He clasped Mana's shaky hands carefully. "Mana," he stated gently. "It's not far... just past that seaweed over there. It's deeper in the tank so the noise won't be as bad... I promise I won't let you go okay? Just hang on to me..."

Another flash and the roar of thunder came over them. Mana yelped, launching off the sand into Yami's arms, the lunge was so sudden that it took Yami a moment to right himself before he could swim okay. He took Mana's arm and hooked it more comfortably with his own and began swimming towards a deeper part of the tank with lots of rocks and kelp. With more water between them and the angry sky, the softer the thunder would be. Granted it would be but a minor, MINOR difference, it might help Mana a little.

"Don't let me g-go again..." Mana said in a shakey, hazed voice.

Again, Yami glanced over at her in confusion. He stayed his questions though, that could wait till dawn. He tightened his grip reassuringly.

"I won't."

The two slipped into the kelp, settling in a small spot with soft sand and rocks around them, the sea flora offering a sort of reverse curtain and the depth of the water muffling the thunder if only a little.

Yami settled and helped Mana down quietly. The mermaid curled up beside him, crossing her arms and tucking her tail around her, making her look small, though she seemed to be a bit better.

And then the thunder started again...

She buried her head in her arms, squeezing her eyes shut, her body shaking to the point where her scaled seemed to glitter with the movement. "Why won't it just stop!?" She cried out.

Yami stared at her, frantically trying to think of something. 'Think... think...Try and remember something that could help...'

'You had a nightmare again didn't you Yami?...' he remembered a calm voice saying. A voice similar to his own, but younger sounding, more innocent and warm. He remembered claws gently running through his hair, every careful stroke making him forget his night terrors a little more. 'I told you if you ate that weird fish you'd get bad dreams. You should eat more clams Yami, like me.'

A chuckle.

'I'll remember that...'

A pause.

I... I think I'm okay now Yugi.'

'Nonsense. You're spines refuse to flatten again, you're not okay yet.'

He remembered grunting in slight frustration at the fact his partner could read him so effortlessly. But he was always grateful...

But it was a memory...

Painful as it was to remember it, it gave him an idea...

Yami carefully reached out and began petting Mana's hair. It was softer then his own, probably from years in a clean tank or something. Mana's spines twitched in reaction to the contact, but she didn't oppose... Another rumble rolled through the tank from above and Mana began to grow agitated again. "You're okay Mana, it already sounds like the worst is over..." Yami said, continuing to run his claws through her hair. "Besides, I'm not going to leave you here alone for the time it's here..."

There was a moment of stillness as the thunder roll faded before Mana peeped up, eyes still wide in fear. He looked down at her, he didn't know why she was so frightened of storms, but whatever the case it had been with her for years and he could only imagine what it would be like to be in the tank at night and all alone when a storm like this hit. How did she cope?...

He was suddenly aware of movement.

Yami snapped out of his thoughts and returned his gaze to Mana. The gold midian had shifted to a (slightly) more relaxed pose, her tail not so much a tight spring coil rather then just tucked close to her. Her shaking had calmed a bit. Thunder boomed in the distance, making her spine twitch, but now she was at least attempting to control herself.

'That at least is an improvement...'

"Why don't you try and get some sleep."  Yami offered gently, pausing in brushing her hair. She paused before nodding a little and shifting into a more comfortable position. There was a moment of stillness before the thunder above sounded again. The gold midian jerked with a small muffle whimper and moved closer to him and gripping his arm. "Guuhhhhh... C-c'mon storm, how am I suppose to get my beauty sleep if you keep sound off?>.." She mumbled...

"Well that's progress..." Yami commented, slightly amused. He then shifted himself beside her and made himself comfortable. "No get some sleep... You look like death..."

Mana looked up at him for a long moment, long enough that it caught Yami's attention, but before he could do anything, she sighed, burying the lower half of her face in her arms and closing her eyes. "Thanks..." she murmured, the word muffled and blunt both from exhaustion and still present anxiety.

Yami nodded curtly, before sitting and resuming petting her hair. Thunder continued to roll occasionally, for each time it did Yami would sooth her again. There were no further words exchanged, each was too busy either trying to get to sleep, trying not freak out or guarding the other.

About an hour passed before the storm had passed, the thunder and lightning nothing but a faint light show in the distance. The thunder now no more then a pouting mumble floating over the sea's horizon. Yami lifted his head and strained his ears. After a good 10 minutes of silence he sighed.

The storm had passed.

Yami sighed and looked down and beside him. "Mana, the storm's gone."

No reply.

Yami leaned down a little and tried again. "Mana, did you hear me?..."

He waited, but still there was only silence.

He tilted his head and looked closer, her breathing had steadied and her frills had relaxed a bit, no longer puffed up or pressed to her back. She had fallen asleep. The dark mer sighed in relief and moved back again. He had been successful in calming her. 'She should be fine for the rest of the night...' he thought. 'Best leave her to sleep...' With this resolve, he moved to swim back to his little roost. However, he didn't move more then a few inches before he felt a tug at his arm. He looked down. "Mana?"

But she was still asleep.

Yami blinked and raised an eyebrow, now looking down at his arm. Mana's arm was still on his upper left arm, gripping it and acting as an anchor. He paused before a terrible realization came over him. 'Oh don't tell me she...!"

Every mer is born with a survival mechanism, an incredibly strong grip that can be brought on and off at will and as simply as opening and closing their mouths or blinking at will. This ability allows mers only minutes old to cling to their mother's maternity fins without budging, expending energy, getting sore or loosing their grip, even if they are fast asleep. In adulthood, mers use this "locking grip" to cling to objects or other mers to keep from drifting around in the ocean's currents, allowing them to stay close to their friends, children and mates.

Or to keep a certain mer anchored to one spot on accident.

Yami could only guess that in her fear, Mana gripped him in panic before he had coaxed her into falling sleep. Now he was essentially stuck. He could try and pry her fingers off, or just ask her to let go... But both would mean waking her up and Yami was simply too tired to do so, and he didn't have the heart.

With a long inhale and exhale, he settled himself back down beside Mana, shifting his position to something more comfortable and closed his eyes.

To his surprise, it didn't take long for him to nod off...

Mana groaned, pulling her lips back and baring her teeth in protest as beams of soft sunlight filtered in to the water and onto her face. She let go of whatever she was gripping in her claws and rubbed her face. She opened her eyes groggily, pouting slightly at the fact that she had to wake up. Never the less, there were fish to be eaten and Mahads to splash, and there certainly wasn't anyone else to do these things for her. With a yawn she moved to get up and froze. Something felt off. She was laying on her side, surrounded by seaweed, something was draped over her shoulder. She moved a little more and bumped her back against something softly. Still very tired, Mana remained perfectly frozen, trying to think of what was beside her.

After a pause, she opened her mouth slightly and tasted the water, allowing scents and chemicals previously undetected by smell alone to wash over the sensitive glands at the roof of her mouth. After a moment, she recognized a scent, something between the smell of iron and deep cold waters...

Ever so carefully, Mana shifted to look back at Yami. He was asleep on his side, facing her. One of his arms was resting on her shoulder thus prohibiting her movements. She blinked, confused. 'Why is he here?...' She then happened to glance at his arm and gawked at the presence of a faint, hand shaped bruise. 'Oh don't tell me I TRAPPED him here...!' She hissed quietly at her self, realizing her accident. There wasn't much she could do about it though. She sighed, laying down again to not chance disturbing Yami. Her thoughts returned to the night before...

And to the booming thunder...

She shuddered and bit her lip, the horrors still fresh in her mind. She also remembered what Yami had done.

She blinked and rested her cheek on her palm. Admittedly, she didn't think the Ebony Royal was capable of being so calming...

And kind...

She was glad to be proven wrong... She smiled. 'Very glad.'

Again, she thought about getting up, but rolled her eyes and relaxed back into the sand, listening to Yami's steady breathing. She didn't wanna wake him by moving, and she certainly wasn't opposed to sleeping in maybe a LITTLE longer...

(Oh look. I've snuck out of your evoloons and into the rest of your gallery.) I've never watched Yugioh. It's just never interested me. But this? This interests me. Your mers are so wonderfully designed! (And I ADORE mermaids. Always have always will. And Mana. I sympathise. Storms royally SUCK.)

Did you know animal planet did a fake documentary about mermaids called Mermaid: the Body Found. I just watched it and I think you might like to watch it too, what with your mers and all that. Funny thing is that even though it was fake a bunch of people thought it was real and that mermaids are real.
